Olive Rants at Whole Foods

"I have shopped at my local Whole Foods store since back when it was a Fresh Fields. As of this month, I find that I can no longer ethically shop at your chain due to your CEO's continued involvement of and endorsement of the Cato Institute, as recently demonstrated by his promotion of their latest publication, "Trapped."

I began shopping at FF/WF because I was looking for an ethical place to shop, for both organic foods (which are scarce more and more on your shelves these days, and there's more and more conventional) and also out of a love for the environment. Cato Institute, especially in its employment of FOX NEWS Milloy and his "Junk Science" campaign, has emerged as one of today's more prominent peddlers of "there's no such thing as global warming."

It's nice you're so concerned about the quality of your Halibut, but the toxic pollution coming down in the rain on me walking into your store from the coal-fired power plants in my state that the Cato Institute helps keep beyond the powers of regulation and polluter-pays principles... well, that's going to kill me faster than the fish at my local fish shop. Even if it's not the best choice by fish standards. If I have to choose between halibut, and ending global warming and toxic rain, I'm afraid I'm going to have to take my grocery money elsewhere. "

So that's what I rattled off to them on their general comment section to their website.

Whole Foods auto-generated response: “Thank you for sending your message to Whole Foods Market. We have received your comment or question and will respond as soon as possible (and that may take a few days). In the meantime, if you require an immediate response, please contact your local store directly.”

And a whole hour has gone by, and not a peep from them. I feel like such a valued customer.... eh. Off to Giant.

Where can I find more info about the Cato Institute and Whole Foods? That disturbs me greatly. The technical term for the Cato Institute is "nuts."

Hi talking guy, thanks for dropping by. If you scroll down my blog to the first post I made about this, "whole foods walkout," I made a list of links in the comment section of that post after someone emailed me a request. I also included Whole Foods' comment link if anyone's interested in voicing their dissaproval as well. Cheers!!

Fortunately for those in Minnesota, there are a number of member owned natural food coops that offer basically the same organic and health food items Whole Foods offers, along with that of locally grown products. I for one have been an avid coop member since 2002; and as a vegan (yes, a crazy foody four years running) I find it hard to shop any other place (as you pointed out for ethical reasons and the like). part of that last statement stems from the fact that I work at one of the coops and so I get a good discount and a lot of free food. "Ha," I say to the corporations!

Hi Nate!! Your co-ops sound scrupscious. I'm starting to look around my section of Maryland and see what other alternatives there are to Whole Foods. Right now, I'm shopping at Giant, since they have the largest selection of organics around, and as I read in the Washington Post, they have good health care for their workers. As I find other organic sources, I'm going to blog about that, although I have no idea if I'm ever going to change things at Whole Foods. I used to love shopping there!!

For those not in Maryland, we recently passed a law over the Republican governor's veto that would have required all companies in Maryland with more than 10,000 workers to pay at least 8% of their profits towards the health care of their workers. Of the 4 companies that would have applied to (Lockheed Martin, John Hopkins University, Giant and Walmart), Walmart was the only one who didn't already. That law was overturned in federal court by a judge who said it was something that had to be passed on a federal level since Walmart operated in more than Maryland. Sigh. But we'll get the bastards yet!!

Levitra (Vardenafil HCL) is the third treatment in the same class as Viagra and Cialis – all being medicines prescribed to men with erectile dysfunction.
